他深切地感到，对公司这些粗粗鲁鲁风风火火的年轻人来说，应该有一位热心肠、事无巨细的把后勤工作都能揽下来的总管式女秘书，不能总让这方面的事来分他们的心。
不久，盖茨在自己的办公室招见了伍德，问他需要的女秘书找到了没有。伍德一连交上几个年轻女性的应聘资料，盖茨看后都连连摇头。
他看中女秘书的干练、稳重、能干，而对花瓶式的年轻女性没兴趣。“难道就没有比她们更合适的人选了？”盖茨失望地责问伍德。
伍德犹犹豫豫地拿出一份资料递给盖茨：“这位女士做过文秘、档案管理和会计员等不少后勤工作，只是她年纪太大，又有家庭拖累，恐怕……” 不等伍德说完，盖茨已看完了这份应聘资料，丢下句“就是她了”后扬长而去。

在“娃娃公司”的日子
露宝刚进公司时觉得这个公司的气氛有点古怪：一般公司请秘书一定要年轻漂亮身材苗条的女性，而自己这么大的年龄居然得以录用，真是令人不可思议。
几天后的一个早上，露宝坐在自己的位置上看到一个男孩直闯董事长的办公室，经过她面前时只是“嗨”地打了一声招呼，像孩子对待母亲似的那么自然，然后摆弄起办公室的电脑。
因为先前伍德曾特别提醒她，严禁任何闲人进入盖茨的办公室操作电脑，所以她立刻告知伍德说有小孩闯进了董事长的办公室。
伍德表情淡漠地说：“他不是小孩，他是我们的董事长。”
“什么，他就是比尔－盖茨？”
“没错。”

关心盖茨的起居饮食，成了露宝日常工作的一项重要内容，这使盖茨感到了一种母性的关怀和温暖，减少了远离家庭而带来的种种不适。
她在工作上也是一把好手，公司离亚帕克机场只有几分钟路程，所以盖茨每次出差时，为了使工作尽可能的满负荷，他往往要在办公室处理事务到最后时刻才开始赶往机场，为了赶时间，他常超车甚至闯红灯。这样的事多了，露金难免为他担心，便请求他每次多留出15分钟去机场，并且每次她都要加以督促。
露金把公司看成一个大家庭，她对公司的每个员工、每项工作，都有一种很深的情感。很自然地，她成了公司的后勤总管，负责发放工资、记账、接订单、采购、打印文件等。

这件事后，露宝定了制度：在微软公司的办公室，清洁工只能清除垃圾桶里的东西，其他地方的东西一律不准移动。
可是问题又来了，程序设计师把喝完饮料的空罐随手扔在电脑旁或桌子角，清洁工也不敢去碰。过不多久，办公室里空罐堆积如山。露宝又得向清洁工解释：哪些东西是有用的，不可以碰；哪些东西是垃圾，应该清除。
露宝成了公司的灵魂，给公司带来了凝聚力，盖茨和其他员工对她都有很强的信赖心理。当微软公司决定迁往西雅图，而露宝因为丈夫在亚帕克基有自己的事业不能走时，盖茨对她依依不舍，留恋不已。
盖茨、艾伦和伍德联名写了一封推荐信，信中给露宝的工作能力以很高的评价。露宝凭着这封推荐信，重找一份工作不成问题。
临别时盖茨握住露宝的手动情地说：“微软公司为你留着空位，随时欢迎你来！”
